The History of Community Baptist Church
2008 - 2012
In 2008, Tom Williams noticed that Devine, Texas had no independent fundamental Baptist churches in town. As he prayed about this void, he felt God impressing upon him to start a new church. After much prayer and consideration, Leon Valley Baptist Church of San Antonio, Texas decided to support Pastor Williams in this venture. God provided a small building to rent, and in September of that year, Community Baptist Church opened its doors as a mission church under the care of Leon Valley to the residents of Devine as well as the surrounding communities. After 3.5 years, Community was able to become a fully-established, self-supporting, independent fundamental baptist church. As the church membership continued to grow, they began to pray about a new building. In December of 2012, God revealed a potential new location.
2013 - 2014
After a few months of preparation work, Community Baptist Church re-located in 2013 and celebrated their first service in the new building on Easter Sunday. At the same time, they also welcomed Brian Ahern as the church's new Senior Pastor. Unfortunately, after dealing with multiple health issues and other life stresses, Pastor Ahern felt he could no longer pastor the church efficiently and resigned in March of 2014. At this point, Tom Williams stepped back into the role of pastor in order to fill the void while the church began its search for a new Senior Pastor.
2014 - 2018
During the next four years, Community Baptist Church searched for a new pastor while continuing to worship and serve together. In the Spring of 2018, Kevin Stephens of Tuscon, Arizona heard about Community's need for a new pastor and contacted Pastor Williams. In May, Kevin traveled with his wife and teenage daughter down to Devine, Texas to candidate. As Community Baptist considered and prayed about the decision, they felt the Lord leading them to extend the position of Senior Pastor to Mr. Stephens. Kevin preached his first sermon on July 1, and was officially installed as the new Senior Pastor of Community Baptist Church on August 5, 2018.
Community Baptist Church is a small country church with a big heart, and their goal is to spread the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ throughout Devine and the surrounding communities.
